Ellie

I made a cup of tea and sat on the front verandah in my pajamas. I was sad my friends were gone, but the peace to be alone with my thoughts was good. That those thoughts were a mess and had not come to any conclusion was something I didn’t want to deal with right now. This whole journey was about time, and I would let it roll along until I decided where I wanted to go in the future. Being away from work these past few weeks made me realize I didn’t want to return to nursing. A part of me was sad, but my heart wasn’t in it anymore. That was enough of a shock to be dealing with at the moment.

I stared at the front garden and was pleased with my efforts. I had put in the plants that Lesley had given me and was watering them in the hope they would survive. Adam had walked out across the road and waved at me before he drove off. I was not giving up hope that he might come around to my way of thinking just yet. He had been too good to let it go. Next weekend we were going to start on the kitchen. Today a skip was coming, and I would start clearing out the shed.

Two hours later, I was suddenly realizing how big this job was. Half of the items I couldn’t even lift because they were too heavy. Adam said he was coming later so I would get him to help. My phone pinged, and I grabbed it from my pocket. It was Josh from the boat. I was disappointed.

Josh: Was wondering if you are free tonight.? Thought we could have dinner at the hotel.

I sat and considered my reply. In the end, I came to the conclusion I would give the evening a go and see if there was any spark there. Adam was saying no so I might as well see if there was anyone else.

Ellie: Thanks, that would be nice.

Josh: I’ll pick you up at six-thirty.

As the day wore on it occurred to me that this was my first date with someone. I couldn’t really call what happened with Adam a date. It had been more of a hook-up with ice cream and sex. This was actually stating that a future looking at different men was really happening. That aside, it was just dinner.

Adam turned up around four as I carried boxes inside. I had shoved them out in the shed when I arrived. They contained the old paperwork that needed shredding. I must’ve looked a mess with dirt and dust all over my jeans and T-shirt. He always smiled when he saw me, and it made me feel like I was wearing Channel.

“Can you help me load the skip before you start work on the car?”

“Of course. By the way, the place looks better already.”

“If I’m going to rent it out, this needs to be empty.” It was funny, but I felt less and less like leaving the place at the moment.
